If successful in fundraising efforts, Stargate could secure approximately $45 billion in initial capital, with plans to engage additional institutional investors.
In January 2025, OpenAI announced a groundbreaking initiative named Stargate, which aims to invest $500 billion in developing AI infrastructure over the next four years, with an immediate commitment of $100 billion.
The Stargate initiative is focused on creating advanced AI computing facilities to support AI agents capable of independently tackling complex problems across various fields.
OpenAI's Chief Financial Officer, Sarah Friar, stressed the importance of significant, long-term investments in AI infrastructure to unlock its transformative potential.
Discussions indicate plans for constructing 10-20 data centers in Abilene, Texas, although the exact number and timeline for completion remain uncertain.
OpenAI is actively seeking additional land and power sources for multiple data center locations, with evaluations underway in Pennsylvania, Oregon, and Wisconsin.
Friar also noted that establishing this foundational infrastructure is essential for harnessing AI's benefits for humanity.
The first data center complex is being developed at a Crusoe site on Lancium's campus in Abilene, Texas, which is fully leased by Oracle for OpenAI's operations.
Site visits to potential new locations in Pennsylvania, Oregon, and Wisconsin are scheduled for the following week.
Both Oracle and OpenAI are currently hiring for positions related to the Abilene data center, signaling an expansion of operations.
While the $100 billion pledged for Stargate is not yet fully secured, SoftBank is expected to invest $19 billion, with Oracle and MGX contributing a combined $7 billion.
SoftBank is reportedly in discussions with Apollo Global and Brookfield for further investments in the Stargate project.
